Windsurfing: Durban Harbour Bay site Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: 30 knots + Surf / Sea State: tight chop Air Temperature: 20 Sea Temperature: 20 Weather: Overcast, blustery Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Bit of a shocker. Arrived at about 11:30 to find spring lows and going out.
A couple of people attempting to sail. Gusty and very fresh wind.
Rigged slowly, in the hope that it would be deep enough for the fin by the
time we were ready; unaware that tide was going out. Sailed a bit but
struggled with depth. Even on a clean plane, I wasn't sure that the tip of
the fin wasn't skimming the sand in places. A submerged obstacle would have
been disaster.
Had to try to gybe in the deeper spots (channel / deep section near bank).
If you didn't get onto a good plane (in the straps) the fin would drag and
you'd have to walk it back to deeper water. Called it quits for a bit to
wait for return of water.
Wind just got stronger and stronger. Everyone seemed overpowered. Once the
tide came back the depth was better but wind was at least as strong. Too
much for the 5.4 and reaches were hardly comfortable. About 30% gybes (lots
of planing ones due to the wind speed).
Had a couple of jumps but generally just too overpowered and not
comfortable enough to do them in a controlled fashion. Chop was also messy
and difficult to pick out a good ramp.
Had a look at Vetch's Beach afterwoods and regretted not trying to find an
offshore spot to sail ! The sea was as flat as a witch's tit. Gusty but
would have given it a bash if we hadn't been exhausted already. Country
club would probably have been even better.
Have learned not to assume that the sea will be in a shocking condition
just because of strong wind. Probably missed out on a good sail.
